Merrigum's annual charity golf day on Saturday was a successful fundraiser for the town's Lions Club.

The Merrigum Lions Club held its annual fundraising charity golf day at Merrigum on Saturday in near perfect golfing weather.

Once again the Lions were generously supported by local sponsors for which they are very grateful and that meant that golfers were well-rewarded for their endeavours.

There were mens and ladies 4BBB stableford events as well as a callaway event for golfers without a handicap. The winners of the ladies event were Ina Hogeboom and Jan Christou with 44 points.

They combined well to finish five points clear of their nearest rivals and just two points shy of the best score of the day.

The runners-up were Shepparton visitors Thelma Bull and Pauline Doonan with 39 points.

In the men’s competition the Shepparton visitors I Bull and K Boote showed the locals a clean pair of heels, easily winning with 46 points in a very strong showing.

They finished ahead of a plethora of pairs who finished on 42 points.

After the countback the runners-up were deemed to be Ash Sanders and Bill Bray from four other pairs who finished on the popular score.

The Lions Club was well represented in the callaway event with Warren Henderson winning with 67, while John Sullivan was the runner-up with 72 but did have to survive a countback with Graeme Donaldson.

Nearest the pins were won by Ina Hogeboom on the sixth, Craig Doherty on the ninth, Tash Doherty on the 12th and Clint Prygoda on the 14th.

The longest drive winners were Tash Doherty for the ladies and Clint Prygoda who almost reached the eighteenth green with his drive.

Straightest drives went to Ina Hogeboom and Graeme Donaldson.

The Merrigum Lions Club would like to thank their many generous sponsors, who were highlighted at presentations, for their support and contribution to the Lion’s ongoing fundraising efforts.

This coming Saturday is the Hinchliffe and Greed sponsored open three person ambrose.

Teams can be men, women or mixed and excellent trophies are offered.

Hit-off is between 11.30am and 1pm with a pre hit-off barbecue available from 11.15am.

The $15 per head entry includes the barbecue, afternoon tea and nearest the pins on all par threes.

A fine and warm sunny day is forecast so organise a team and come and enjoy a great day of golf.

Visitors are most welcome.

A reminder to all members that the annual general meeting will be held tomorrow night Wednesday October 11 at 8pm.

Come and have a say in the future direction of the club and elect and support the new incoming committee.

The committee can only represent you if you come and support them and offer your ideas for the future.
