Perfect day for golf in Merrigum

By Tatura Guardian

It was another perfect day for golf at Merrigum, with the cloud cover and a gentle breeze keeping the temperature to a pleasant level.

The day was even good enough to drag a long missing member back for the stableford event, the first round of what we all hope will be the resurrection of his golfing career.

The competition was tight at the top with a countback required to decide the winner, with the honours going to Bruce Brown for his 38 points and better back nine.

He showed glimpses of the form that won him the club championship last year, which is an ominous sign for the rest of us because he was the dominant player at the club in his champion year.

The player he beat in the countback was Bill Bray, whose 18 points on the back nine was not enough to wrest the honours from Bruce.

Instead he had to settle for a ball in the ball competition. He was joined in the ball competition by James Campbell, who scored 37 points, and Bruce Andrews with 35.

Nearest-the-pins were won by Bill Bray on the ninth, Bruce Andrews on the jackpot 12th and Barry Webber on the 14th.

While on the subject of nearest-the-pins, a retraction has been requested for last week's nearest-the-pin on the ninth, which has caused some family controversy.

A retraction as such will not be forthcoming because the scribe only reported what was written in the book, possibly by a Richmond supporter with his mind understandably on more important things.

However, the player who missed their moment in the sunshine was Michael Doherty, not brother Craig as reported.

Because of an 11-point tie between Andrew Wood and Clint Prygoda, the chook shed challenge will jackpot to next Saturday.

This Saturday's event is par.

This season's twilight competition begins this Thursday and the first round will be the qualifier for the Australia-wide Play 9 competition, which was publicised last week. The top two male and female players will go on to the district playoff.

A reminder that the annual meeting will be tomorrow night at the clubhouse starting at 8pm. Come and support your club and take a role on the committee, instead of allowing the same people to do all the work all of the time. They want to be able to enjoy the club as well.
